Bob Ayers (1968-1975) coachayers@verizon.net

In spite of taking the 7 year plan, I did finally graduate in '75, actually got a master's degree from UVa of all places, and stayed out of jail somehow. Engineer III (civil engineer) with Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. Married with 3 kids, Michael (21) who will be at VT in engineering in 2008, Cynthia (18) at George Mason and Melissa (13). When not working or involved in family activities, I have been coaching recreational soccer teams in Burke, VA for 14 years. (At Woovit)

Phil Beckman (1966-1968) philbeckman@comcast.net

Life After Woovit: Many (too many!) radio stations and one TV station. Highlites include WAPE, WGH, WRQX, WAXY, WSHE, WROV, WQRK, WNOR...Ops Mgr/AM drive/Ass't CE for WJGO-FM in Ft. Myers, FL... and a lot of side engineering work.

[Webmaster's note: the following addendum is from an article in the Naples Daily News, March 7, 2003: Last year, Phil Beckman was let go as the main talent on WJGO- FM Groovin Oldies 102.9 in Naples. The station needed to cut costs and even though Beckman was the jack of all trades, he was let go. Now Phil is the general manager and morning talent on WDRR-FM, 98.5. Beckman is enjoying the change of format from oldies to smooth jazz. "I find that the music doesn't seem to get old, and there aren't any songs that I am thoroughly sick of," Beckman says. "How one's fortunes can change so rapidly in this business."]

Other Comments: The times at Tech were fun... so much so that I didn't graduate from there. In fact I flunked out twice! I did finally get that degree from Lynchburg College. Hot Damn! (At Woovit)

Jim Bigwood (1975-1978) jbigwood@mail.mpt.org

After WUVT I worked for WBAL AM and WIYY FM (98 Rock) in Baltimore for 12 years. Currently, I'm the Audio Supervisor at Maryland Public Television (MPT) where I work on various programs including Motorweek and Wall Street Week for PBS. (At Woovit)

Gary Blau (1972-1973) gblau@radiomasters.com

Got to replace THT on WQRK in '74, using the same air name! (No one was fooled.) Got the heck off the air and into engineering full time. Have been a CE and group DOE over the years. Even was part owner of a station in Altoona that had the presence of mind to hire THT as PD! (I'm not sure he's forgiven us yet...) Currently in Miami as DOE for the Jefferson Pilot South Florida stations, WLYF, WMXJ, WAXY. Woovit was absolutely pivotal in my life, and quite unexpected. It's safe to say that if I hadn't visited the station during my orientation week prior to my Freshman year I would probably be honorably employed doing a real job somewhere now. (At Woovit)

Bob "Bachelor Bob" Boling (1969-1973) rsboling@yahoo.com

Computer Hardware and Software Engineer and Consultant. Until 1981, worked for WSLS-WSLC, WJJJ-WVVV, WCIR, WROV and WKEX. Phone (540) 951-0502. Address: 2303 Terra Bella Street, Blacksburg. (At Woovit)

Joey "The Boo" Buot (1986-1987) enginfrance@yahoo.com

Lived in Harrisonburg, VA from 1988 to 2001 working for Merck. Transferred for Merck to a production facility in Clermont-Ferrand, France for three years on an overseas process engineering assignment. Moved back to the US at the end of 2004, resigned from Merck and am now working for a small biotech company in Boston.

Still listening to alternative music at the near age of 40. Last show I saw was Kay Hanley (ex Letters to Cleo) at BU when she and her husband returned to Boston for one show. (At Woovit)

Jeannette Caporale (1972-1976) jeacap@hotmail.com

1976-1978 WPRW Manassas, News 1979-1980 WLPL Baltimore, DJ 1981-1986 Arbitron, Radio Prod Coord 1987-1997 The Research Group, Music Test Moderator 1999 What should I be when I grow up? 2000-2003 Orrtax Software, Tax Analyst 2003 Whew! This high tech is hard work.

Gosh, this is the scariest website I've seen in a long time. Am I really that old? I have lived in Seattle, WA since 1997. 1987-1997 I lived in Los Angeles. While in LA I traveled around the country moderating music tests and saw and heard copious numbers of radio stations and towns. What fun! Then the company disbanded in 1997. I switched to the red hot tech industry and parlaying my tax knowledge (thank you H&R Block) and some programming courses into a job writing income tax software. The work was fun. The money MUCH better than radio. I bought a house in West Seattle - retirement investment. I'm now pondering the next job direction after being laid off in March [2003]. Radio seems such a long, long, long time away. Glad to hear where Ernie K, Gary Blau, Jim Bigwood, Dave Day, Graham Wilson are. I'm in touch with Jon Banks in Glenwood Springs, CO. [He's] married, one kid and last working radio consulting. But he does not answer his email. (At Woovit)

Hal (Dick Adams) Curling (1968-1968) bhcurling@msn.com hal.curling@aquilagroup.com hal.curling@arl.army.mil

I am now a senior software/systems engineer for MELE Associates/Aquila Group working as a contractor for the Army Research Lab (ARL/SLAD) at White Sands Missle Range, NM. I'm a grandad (4 wonderful granddaughters and a grandson) and have a great grandson (I'm REALLY not THAT old!!! LOL) My wife Becky and I have houses in Rio Rancho, NM and Pagosa Springs, CO but spend most of the time in Pagosa. And, of course, I spend time in Las Cruces, NM at work. I would love to hear from other alums during 1968, especially "Buffalo Bill Robins", who is really Lee Thompson (I went to HS with him at Princess Anne in Virginia Beach) and is now in NC and owns or manages a radio station. If you have any info on how to get hold of him please let me know. Thanks. I worked at WUVT with "Buffalo" Bill and Greg E. Lovin, among others, during 1968. (At Woovit)

Larry Dillon (1972-1976) lscott@suscom.com

Will be celebrating (perhaps celebrating is too strong a word) 20 years with good ol' Susquehanna in November 2002. ("I only came for a year, and forgot my keys!") Still on mid-days [as Larry K. Scott] on WARM-103 and letting them think I know how to build a web page (actually, I'm going to start cutting and pasting your content onto our pages). I get some e-mail from Barty Bryant and have even heard from Tom Bondurant and Randy "Ol' Hud" Hudson a time or two since I figured out how to boot the computer in '96.

Judy is doing well as home-maker and is amazed we've been together through thick and thin (mostly thick) for 27 years. Main daughter Amanda is currently at Radford U, double-majoring (for now) in English and Music. Alternate back-up daughter Rachel is attending one of our fine local high schools (at least we think that's where she spends the day). Upon her graduation we're "encouraging" her to gravitate toward Virginia so we can all live again among "God's people."

Mike Fesko (1972-1976)

I was in the Highty Tighties and am still in the Air Force, but really want to get back into voice work. I've worked part-time in radio as much as a miltary career would allow, and had my own (weekend) morning radio show in OH, GA, and FL, as well as part-time work at WLPM/WFOG (Suffolk, VA) and WJLY (Currituck/Moyock, NC). Also worked for Davis DeeJays in Annapolis, MD. I did some technical voiceover work for MITRE corporation and the Air Force, too. (At Woovit)

David Fuchsman (1976-1980) fuchsmad@montcourt.org

After graduation, I attended law school at the University of Dayton. I practiced law for about 20 years, and I am now a judge in Dayton, Ohio. I have been married 16 years...have 3 children ages 13, 12 and 10.
Nine years after I left Blacksburg, I brought my then girlfriend/now wife to the Cascades in order to propose to her. She was too tired from the walk to the falls to say no. (At Woovit)

Tom Fugate (1974-1978) tom_fugate@yahoo.com

I worked in TV news in Bristol, VA from 1/79-6/85. Then I went back to school and got a CS degree at ETSU. I now work for a small computer/software company in Kingsport TN, where I am responsible for thousands of lines of COBOL code for a medical office software package.. (At Woovit)

Elliot Gibbs (1991-1994) http://www.powhatan.k12.va.us/teachers/PJHS/egibbs/index.html

After graduating from VT, I worked all over. I was an environmental technical worker in Culpeper Christiansburg, and Richmond, VA as well as Philadelphia, PA. Eventually, I moved to Madison, WI to work in an Environmental Laboratory. From there, I served in AmeriCorps*VISTA in Philadelphia, PA. From there, I moved to Richmond, VA to help a Non-Profit organization. I became a Field Manager and helped this Non-Profit acquire more and more strength.

After a while, I decided it was best to go back to school to change my career path. I went back to school (Radford University) to become a science teacher. After two years at (RU) I graduated with Honors, a few graduate classes, and a science teaching certification.

Instead of staying in VA to teach science, I decided to teach in North Carolina (Davie County). I spent two years teaching High School Science at a school that was built before the invention of electricity. My student’s I taught were wonderful but my fellow staff members were less than cordial to me. Many of them felt my area of scientific expertise (Earth/Space Science) was less than worthy of theirs. Along the way, for the sake of “fun times”, I gained the necessary training to drive a school bus.

After my second year, I decided it was best to look elsewhere for a new teaching position. My patience was wearing thin and my roommate, at the time, was a UVA graduate. Those various combinations made for tough times.

Thanks to an old friend from Radford University, I learned of an opening in Powhatan County Public Schools back here in Virginia. I applied for the job and was hired on. That was three years ago….. Now I am nearing the point at which Powhatan County Public Schools will be hiring me as a tenured teacher. Additionally, I own a home in Richmond and have a lovely girlfriend.

Life is grand. I hope the same applies to you all as well! Take care! (At Woovit)

Ginny Gillikin (1988 -1991) http://www.myspace.com/ginnysg

I am an intern at Deep South Records in Raleigh, NC. I proofread the Raleigh Downtowner, a monthly newspaper, and write for the City Insight magazine. (At Woovit)

Doug Hall (1966-1976) dougandsue@justwindsor.org

Worked at WSLC-AM/WSLQ-FM (Q99) during my "second stint" at VPISU from 1973 to late 1974. Built and put on the air WQBX-AM (now WFNR) Blacksburg/Christiansburg with Mike Williams. Slid over to TV in 1975 at WSLS-TV (Channel 10) as engineer with occasional VO work for spots. Nine years with PBS Washington, USIA (TV) for a year, GE Americom for 3+ years, Primestar for 8+ years. Now "retired" working in the Communications Studies department at The College of New Jersey. Oh yeah, did six months on AFRTS Adak, AK in 1970.
Other Comments: For those who knew her... I lost my soulmate of 30 years and wife of 27 years to metastatic breast cancer on 12/18/2003. Please listen to all of the prevention warnings and heed them. (That's it for my soapbox.)

Norm Hyde (1977-1980) nhyde@vafb.com

Was a top-40 jock at WJJJ-WVVV Christiansburg for 18 months (sadly, now dark), moved to WSLQ-99 Roanoke for a year and a half as a classic rock jock. Got fired for the first time, and did elevator music at WPVR Roanoke for six months before finally putting my college degree to work at the WFIR Roanoke news desk. Moved to Richmond and the Virginia News Network in 1985 as a network news anchor, got fired a second time, and ended up at the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation.(Watch our video) Did a daily farm news show for 9 years before becoming a video producer. Spent 6 years doing an in-house video newsletter before going public with "Down Home Virginia," a half-hour feature show about rural Virginia that airs on 44 cable access channels on systems across the state. We're even on in Blacksburg! Got a beautiful wife I met in Roanoke and a seven-year-old boy who wants to know what all those crazy old albums are - he's never known anything but CD's, which are fast becoming obsolete too. (At Woovit)

Steve Floyd, a.k.a. "Mr. Ozone" (1977-1980) steve.floyd@apti.com

I graduated Electrical Engineering in the summer of 1980. Found myself designing radar and communications systems at E-Systems in Falls Church, VA for the next 16 years! Ended up with an MSEE degree from Johns Hopkins in 1992 specializing in communications systems and radio engineering. In 1996 I joined Advanced Power Technologies in downtown DC, just outside Georgetown (excellent!). This work keeps me commuting up to Alaska frequently as the Chief RF Engineer and Project Engineer for the HAARP research station. This is a massive HF radio transmitting facility used for ionospheric heating research. Now I've got 48 massive transmitters to look after, and I always think back to the early days of transmitter engineering at the Woove. Radio Free Alaska, that's my ultimate goal! My wife Mary Jo, daughter Ashley , and I reside in Fairfax, VA and I'm active in cycling, skiing, Ham radio, and many other areas to numerous to mention. I'd love to hear from my Woovit friends, so please drop me a note. e-mail: steve.floyd@apti.com (At Woovit)

Bob Keeton (1968-1972) http://www.LivingSuccessfully.com

Being fired twice convinced me that radio wasn't stable. At WROV, where I did Saturday overnights, they took exception when I played the only 4 spots logged for the ball game then ran PSA's the next 2 hours. Go figure! Then WLVA/Lynchburg let me go because the PD has a 'friend' who showed up in town wanting work. OK...so maybe PART TIME is better? (It has been.) Did 13 years part-time at 50,000 watt WRVA in hometown, Richmond. I was a participant in the 'right sizing' done by Clear Channel in the late 90's. But Living Successfully, the show I launched there, is international - 7 days/week on Wisdom Radio which includes Sirius Satellite (stream 132) and www.WisdomRadio.com. It's also at www.HealthyLife.net and on demand at www.EarthChannel.org.

Other Comments: As I was told on being hired at WRVA, "We believe you've made your mistakes other places so we trust you on the air here." Just gotta say, "Thanks, WUVT!" I don't think anyone was actually hurt. (At Woovit)

Mike Kender (1982-1982) mtkender@verizon.net

I've been working in finance in New York City for the past 20 years.

Other Comments: WUVT was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to any student. How many other opportunities will you get to impose your musical taste on thousands of strangers? (At Woovit)

Brenda Jean Kibler (1966-1969) teramo48@aol.com

I was born too early for a woman to break into broadcasting. The only job I was ever offered in the field was as a secretary! Unfortunately I've become a career bureaucrat, but at least I use the writing and editing skills that I honed at Va. Tech. (At Woovit)

Rich Kolker (1971-1973) rkolker@spacepolicy.org

After my involuntary exit from Tech (too many hours spent at Woovit instead of in class), I eventually got my degree in broadcast journalism (from Maryland) and did news at stations in Brunswick ME, Lynchburg VA, and Altoona PA (not in that order) before going back to school to learn computer programming. Last time at WUVT was in connection with the off-campus move while Squires was being renovated. these days I'm down at the Kennedy Space Center working on the new system for launching shuttles (coming soon to a launch pad near you!), and feeding my journalism urge by writing op-eds, mostly on space policy. (At Woovit)

Ernie Kyger (1973-1977) erniek4567@aol.com

Worked at WELK-AM in Charlottesville, WLEE-AM in Richmond, and 14 years with DC101 in Washington with Howard Stern, Greaseman, and crazy surroundings. No one crazier though than Ray Childers. Now work at WASH-FM in Washington, DC. (At Woovit)

Dave Landers (1972-1976) dlanders@us.ibm.com

Got an MSEE from VT in 1979, went to work for IBM here in Raleigh, NC working on POS terminals (cash registers)...now one of the lead engineers/architects in POS developmenet...travel all around the world working with suppliers. Pretty cool job for a geek kid from Roanoke.
Other Comments: Married my telco boss's daughter in 1979 (I worked every fall for the phone company putting phones in on campus). Now have two young kids (7 and 10 in 2004). Still kinda miss broadcasting and broadcast electronics. (At Woovit)

Tom Ligon (1971-1974) www.angelfire.com/va2/TomLigon/index.html

Bill Lukens (1976-1977) lukens@adelphia.net

Still talking on the radio, but as an Air Traffic Control Supervisor for the FAA in the Leesburg, VA AFSS. Pays better, but it's not as fun as college. (At Woovit)

John T.M. Lyles (1975-1978) jtml at vla.com (replace at with @, no spammers)
Spent few years at Delta Electronics in Alexandria learning high power RF construction, then went to Broadcast Electronics Inc in Quincy, IL, from 1981 to 1985 to develop FM transmitters. In 1986 back to East Coast, for E.I. Dupont, doing 'industrial' high power RF work, then moved to New Mexico in 1992 to play with higher (!) power RF equipment at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Patrick & Kathleen Eaton-Robb (1984-1988) peatonrobb@aol.com

As you might have gathered, we married. We now live in Connecticut with two kids. Pat was a DJ at WVVV after graduation, then became a reporter at WPOP, an all news station in Hartford, Conn. He is now a reporter for The Associated Press. Kathleen got out of radio, and is an underwriter with Aetna.(At Woovit)

Bob Ridle (1966-1968) bridle@rica.net Bob's jingle

Basically my career after WUVT has been all radio...divided into two parts. Part 1 - working for "others"..WJJJ/WVVV-Blacksburg, WRVA/WRVQ-Richmond, WKDW/WSGM-Staunton and WTAR/WLTY-Norfolk. Part 2 - working for myself! My wife and I owned and operated our own station...WZXI-FM here in Staunton. It's a 6KW Class A on 95.5 MHz licensed to the nearby community of Buffalo Gap. We purchased it in 1995...changed the frequency (former 105.5 MHz/3 kW), increased the power and changed format to an AC.

After five years of hard work and a lot of fun, Ann and I sold WZXI-FM to Easy Radio, Inc. It's now part of a group of two FM's and an AM that will be co-located in Harrisonburg, VA. Now here's an intersting twist on the deal...the President of Easy Radio is Jason Cave, another Hokie! I belive Jason put some time in at WUVT during the early 90's. Gotta be a first here of some sort...one WUVT/Hokie person selling another his radio station?

Why the sale? Medical needs within our families had increasingly been pulling Ann and I away from the station. Mom and Pop radio stations work best when Mom and Pop consistently put in "the time". We realized that was no longer possible.Jason will be doing some exciting things with his new combo.

Ann and I are Grandparents now! Our son Bob graduated from Old Dominion University in 1993 (B.S. - Criminal Justice) and is now a police officer in Florida. He and our daughter-in-law Kelly have two sons...Robert Collin Ridle and Evan William Ridle. (At Woovit)

Norman Rose (1967-1969) NormRose@aol.com

After WUVT I taught electronics in the Air Force, worked a coumple of years for a utility, and have been involved in engineering and management in the electric motor business since 1976. Married in 1974, have two sons and a grandson. Living in the southeastern corner of Louisa County since 1974, working in Richmond. (At Woovit)

Bill Suffa (1975-1980) wsuffa@commbiz.com

Some how I ended up in Texas. In big media. With the biggest radio company in the world (1700 stations worldwide, and counting). Consolidation has been very, very good to me.

But I never really left the Woove and the famed Orgasmatron (RIP).

Once I realized that Tech would, in fact, be stupid enough to give me a diploma, I was certainly going to be smart enough to grab it and run.

Found myself in New York working for the same FCC we lothed and feared. That got old pretty fast, and I joined a Washington consulting firm, Jules Cohen and Associates, doing engineering work for broadcast and telecom companies before they were worth much money. In 1989, I had the opportunity to join with two partners and start a new consulting firm.

One of my clients was Randy Michaels, at the time COO of a little company called Jacor.

In '96, as deregulation was starting, I was fresh out of graduate B-school, and Randy made me an offer I couldn't refuse. So, I packed my bags for Cincinnati to become VP of Strategic Development at Jacor. In some ways, this was as close to being at the Woove as you could find (what else would you expect from a company that owned - no joke - WKRC, In Cincinnati). I still have memories of shooting a potato cannon from the deck at Randy's house.

Jacor got gobbled up by Clear Channel, and I was offered (and accepted) the job of SVP-Capital Management, which means I manage all of Clear Channel's capital spending and assets worldwide, in radio, television, outdoor, and entertainment. Which brought me to San Antonio, where I now reside.

I never really left Woovit, though. Amazing the common sense we had compared to some in the business today...

It has been really amazing the number of Woovit types I've run across around the country over the years. Gary Blau, Bob Crockett, Ernie Kyger (when he was working in DC for the Benders, alongside Greaseman), John King, Mo Donaldson (who died a couple of years ago, RIP), Dwight Weller (RIP), Bob Mosolgo (most recently heard on a public station in Charlottesville), Jon Banks, Scott Birdwell, [John] Lyles, too, and more. We used to do the "Woovit Night Out" at the NAB convention. I almost forgot Mark & Helaine Krob! Helaine was in my graduate B-School class!

One of these days, when I get my boxes unpacked from the latest move, I'll post some of the pictures I have on my web site. (At Woovit)

See Buffalo Bob's Remembrance Rant

Keith Thompson (1985-1986)

I left WUVT my junior year when Pat Robb helped me get a job with WFNR in Christiansburg, at the time a country station. After graduation in '88 I worked for a couple of small AM stations in Virginia before taking on afternoon drive at the old WSLC-AM in Roanoke.

I'm now the music director and assistant program director at WXCY-FM, a country station in Havre de Grace, MD where we serve the Wilmington, DE and Baltimore, MD markets. I currently voicetrack overnights and do vacation fill-in and a weekend shift. I did nights for 8 and a half years before taking on APD duties. I've also been songwriting and recording home demos in hopes of getting a rock band started. I live in Middletown, DE with my wife Vicki and our three cats. (At Woovit)

Thomas H. Twine (1970-1976) tomtwine@yahoo.com

After graduation, I worked at WCOG(AM) in Greensboro, NC. Barty Bryant and Tom BonDurant helped bring me to Charlottesville, VA and WCHV(AM)/WWWV(FM). I later moved to WINA(AM)/WQMC(FM) there.

I've been in Altoona, PA since March of 1987, when Gary Blau brought me up here to be operations manager of WALY(FM) in Altoona. I started part-time at Altoona's CBS affiliate WTAJ-TV, doing voice-overs in September of 1987 while still working full-time at WALY.

After Gary and his partners sold WALY, I worked briefly part-time at WFBG-FM in Altoona (now WFGY), then full-time at WHPA(FM) in Hollidaysburg (later WMXV, then WMAJ-FM, now WRKY).

When a full-time job opened up at WTAJ-TV in 1992, I left radio for the swinging, swirling world of television working on the technical staff. For about 2 years I did weather on-air in the morning and at noon. Until the end of August 2001 I designed graphics for the Chyron iNFiNit! character generator and was the audio operator for 10 NEWS at 12:00 Noon, 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00 p.m.

I then worked as a radio broadcaster for AccuWeather in State College for two and a half years, reading weather forecasts for 38 radio stations every weeknight, plus reading states' lottery numbers for the Associated Press audio service.

After AccuWeather I hosted mornings on adult contemporary Lite 94.5/WLTS (FM) and middays on oldies WOWY(FM) in State College. I'm now a support engineer for Newsroom Solutions, makers of the NewsTicker and Freedom FX, among other newsroom and on-air tools for local TV staions.

I married Becky in 1990 and we have two cats. (At Woovit)

"Steve Slack" Steven Vogt (1978-1982) obnostic@yahoo.com

I live in Chattanooga, TN after spending 4 years in Florida and a couple dozen years in various parts of VA. Currently I'm a Section 8 rent appraiser, putting landlords on the hot plate when they deserve it. "You're shoving three people in a broom closet and charging what?!!" I'm also a partner in a vintage clothing boutique and soon, a coffeehouse.

Still involved in music, though my tastes have expanded considerably. Over the last couple of years I've been solely buying thrift shop records, and old portable players, to the extent that my apartment now looks like an old man's, crowded with junk and a few hamster trails running through it. Luckily, I'll be moving up the road in November ('05) and much of this stuff will soon be up for sale at the boutique. I'm too busy to maintain a website and i'll be changing ISP's anyway, so contact me through my yahoo address. Seeya! (At Woovit)

Scott Wainwright (1966-1969) wsw2@erols.com Scott's jingle

After graduating from Tech in May '69 (B.S. Civil Engineering) I went to Connecticut to work for 5 years, before moving to the DC area (Vienna, VA) in 1974. My career has been in Traffic and Transportation Engineering, and I never got into radio at all as a career. But I kept listening. And about 7 years ago, I got into the hobby of collecting airchecks and jingles, mostly from the 50's to the mid-70s, but through to today's radio also. I have about 1000 cassettes of these "classics of yesteryear", including some of WUVT '66-'71 era. (At Woovit)
