From Bob Sweeny (1960-1966):
Bob Kirby, Bruce Savage, and George Gauntney were always kind to newcomers at the station. I remember when the movie "Ben-Hur" came to Blacksburg. Because of the student audience, the Lyric Theatre always got big movies before many of the Southwest Virginia theatres. I was doing newscasts on Sunday evening. We signed off at 11 after my last newscast. Bob Kirby came in to change the "Ben-Hur" spot we were running. He needed an announcer, so he asked me to stay over. He wrote out some copy and we ran through it once. Bob made some corrections in the copy and changed the music he wanted to use. As we redid the spot, the music ran out early. Bob reached over, picked up the tone arm, dropped the needle back, I finished up the copy, and the music reached the perfect crescendo and ended with the perfect bash!
I've done a lot of production over the years, but I've never seen anyone do what Bob did that night.
