Who/what were FRED and RALPH?

FRED and RALPH were Woovit's two acronymically-correct devices.

FRED

FRED was the Associated Press Teletype machine, its name standing for Frequently Read Editorial Device.

RALPH

RALPH was an Ampex reel-to-reel tape machine that found its way into Studio B. It could handle 10.5-inch reels and play at 7.5 and 15 ips. It was christened our Royally Acquired Long-Playing Hack.

It is generally believed that Bob Ayers had a large part in naming these two devices.
