What was the Orgasmatron?

The legendary WUVT Orgasmatron was the big locked equipment rack in the Engineering Room. It was the right half of a double-wide rack, as shown at left just prior to WUVT's move to temporary quarters on Main Street in the late '80s for the renovation of Squires Student Center facilities. (Click here to see other pre-move pictures.)

John T.M. Lyles (jtml): "Of course, the name came from that little booth that Woody Allen loved in one of his best films."
A group of Wooviteers, including your Humble Webmaster, attended a showing of Woody Allen's satirical vision of the future "Sleeper" ("You must understand, all of your friends died 200 years ago." "But they all ate organic rice..") in 1973. We went en masse, which we did quite frequently when going places. Several of us had previously seen Allen's "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask" at the Lyric Theatre.

We were so impressed by the concept of the orgasmatron, the chamber
in the film that gave humans pleasure ("My brain? That's my second favorite organ.") that we came to give the closable, lockable cabinet the same name. Someone with a DYMO® labelmaker made it official.
