Stories: Paul McCartney Dead? "Cousin Eddie" on WABC
From Ed Bayne, at WUVT from 1966 to 1969 under the name of "Cousin Eddie":

I had forgotten about this ... but Scott Wainwright reminded me of it ... now I remember calling WABC ... but I did not know I made it on the air until over 30 years later ...

WUVT is mentioned about 15 minutes into the aircheck (total 21 minutes) ...

Webmaster's note: The link above will lead you to a RealAudio file of an aircheck of Roby Yonge's last show on WABC/New York, October 21, 1969. Roby already knew that his contract would not be renewed and he'd be off the air in less than two weeks. At the time there was speculation that Paul McCartney was dead. RKO Radio, which owned WOR-FM, then a direct WABC competitor, had produced a documentary of all the "clues" to the story that Paul was dead and had syndicated it to all the RKO Top 40 stations. WABC Program Director Rick Sklar had ordered the WABC jocks not to engage in speculation or even mention the rumors on-air. Roby threw a handful of tape cartridges at the engineer and totally blew away the WABC format, telling listeners of all the rumors and clues. Rick Sklar was called at home by another WABC employee and went to the studios, taking Yonge off the air and replacing him with WABC staff announcer Les Marshak (the same guy you've heard in later years on TV announcing all those awards shows).

The RealAudio is courtesy of Allen Sniffen's wonderful salute to 77/WABC at www.musicradio77.com.

I defy you to listen to Roby's aircheck and not once think of Art Bell! :)
